"Dormant Ties" - Most Effective Who You Know Networking

Your next big career opportunity might come from someone you haven't spoken to in years. In professional networking, these forgotten connections are known as "dormant ties." While the phrase might sound a bit ominous, it simply refers to the people already in your extended network—former coworkers, old classmates, past clients, or even an old neighbor. When navigating a job search, tapping into these existing, trusted relationships is often far more effective than trying to build brand-new connections from scratch. Successful networking is about reviving authentic bonds, not just asking for a job.

That said, in some circumstances, these network relationships could take some time and effort to build on trust and comfortability, but in the long run, it will be well worth it. Believe it or not, as they say in the famous expression, "it's not what you know it's who you know," is now truer than ever before.  These folks could be your ticket to that dream job you have wanted so badly, you could taste it!  So, getting on their sweet side is the most effective way to getting your foot in the door, and to the top of the interview list...because it's the tie that binds much more so in the corporate world, than a pretty resumé alone.

Once you reconnect with these professionals, you'll want to avoid seeming obvious as to your intention.  Ask about their day-to-day challenges, industry shifts, or skill recommendations, but ask them in an authentic way, to show you are truly invested in learning about the industry. These interactions will certainly make an impression on them.

Beyond structured outreach, several alternative avenues exist for expanding your professional circle, including local professional groups, targeted networking events, career fairs, and community volunteer initiatives, and so much more. Broadening your exposure increases the likelihood of connecting with individuals who possess direct ties to hiring managers or exclusive opportunities within your target field.

If your job search has hit a plateau, you are not alone—and it might be time to shift from submitting applications to building a targeted networking plan.
